Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have always had a caretaker type of passion in my heart and right out of high school, I began fulfilling that in my role as a CNA/Nurse's Aide. I absolutely loved my time as a CNA and fully embraced the rewarding nature of helping others. I ended that career once I became a mother for the first time and transitioned to a full time stay at home parent.
What led you to become a Doula?: I was first introduced to the doula world when I learned of the role during my second pregnancy. I was desperate for extra support as I found my first birth lacking. I had a very positive experience and that led me to make sure I had a doula the third and final time as well! I too wanted to offer this support to other women and their families. While dabbling in the birth doula world, my focused switched a bit due to the lack of support I found once my births concluded. My postpartum journey was anything but easy and I couldn't help but wish my doulas could have supported me more during that season of mine. I found out that postpartum doulas existed and my heart pulled me in! My true passion now resides in the postpartum period.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Insightful, caring, open-minded, compassionate, supportive, knowledgeable, and empathetic are some words others have used to describe me! In addition, I have reviews up on my Facebook page and website from those I have had an impact on!
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: First and foremost, I love all of ProDoula's informative resources, evidence based birth's website, kellymom and la leche league for breastfeeding tips/resources, and books; The Fourth Trimester, Guilt Free Bottle Feeding, Mothering the Mother, The Whole Brained Child, and How To Talk So Little Kids Will Listen. Plus, a plethora of podcasts!
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Beautiful. Amazing. Such strength. Resilience. I always start to marvel at what the female body is capable of and how truly magical it seems. Second; Is she aware of such power that she holds? Does she have a support system in place to acknowledge all of this when she might doubt herself? Does she know that she can seek out the support she needs outside of friends and family? I wonder if she has a birth doula and/or a postpartum doula?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Peace of mind for sure. The extra reassurance and confidence you can offer to a client goes such a long way. Being a parent can be tough. With other people forcing their opinions onto you and leaving a lot of room for doubt, it's a beautiful thing to help someone see that they are in fact a good parent. We all doubt it at some point and probably more than once.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: This is so hard for me! I love so many genres of TV shows and movies! I am a FRIENDS fanatic through and through. I really enjoy a great vampy drama like The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and True Blood. I also enjoy my fair share of documentaries on crime, history, and controversial topics. I'm currently watching Game of Thrones. For movies, I tend to gravitate towards romantic dramas and romantic comedies but also mystery/thriller/horror.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I actually have not been to many places outside of my tri-state area but I did recently vacation to New Orleans, Louisiana and it was amazing. I'd love to go back! I'd also like to add Colorado, Maine, Hawaii, Texas, and Florida to my state travels. Mexico, Spain, Jamaica, France, Italy, Germany, and Thailand would be on my list for abroad.
What is your favorite food?: Pasta! Carbs in general!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love spending time with my husband. It could be spent out and about or just being lazy at home. He really is my best friend. I love cuddling up to my kiddos to watch a movie or helping them create the best fort in the living room! By myself, I take a huge interest in my comfort and well-being. I love getting a nice massage, doing yoga, hot baths/showers, and getting comfy with books or watching some Netflix.
Who lives in your house?: I share my home with my husband (Josh) and our three beautiful children Leighton, Walker, and Wesley. We have a dog named Bo and a cat named Pandora.
