Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My diverse background helps me to connect with people from all walks of life in a nonjudgmental way.
What led you to become a Doula?: I became fascinated with pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period while preparing for the birth of my first son. This fascination stuck, and I decided to explore doula work as a way to stay connected to this amazing process and help women and their families have a positive experience.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
The single most frequent comment I get is that I’m incredibly calm—almost nothing ruffles my feathers. I’m also often the quiet observer who then injects humor into the proceedings.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I love the Lamaze website and book (The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence) as they simplify all of the evidence-based information. I also recommend Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth for its inspiring stories. After the baby arrives, I like kellymom.com for breastfeeding information, and I stress the importance of connecting with other local new parents as you adjust to life with baby (MeetUp, local email lists, Facebook groups). Love & Logic is a great resource for the everyday challenges of parenting as baby turns into a toddler and child and beyond!
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I feel immediately softer, the way I would see my mother looking wistfully at new moms as I was growing up. I get it now! I feel happy for her, and I feel some motherly concern as I hope she is getting enough support and help. Our culture isn’t the best at supporting pregnant women or new parents.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: As much support as possible in whatever form works best for HER needs. My attention and care in tuning in to what will serve her best.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Movie: The Big Lebowski Show: Seinfeld
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Any place that allows ample opportunity to enjoy nature, be it beach, mountains, forest, and so forth. I love the city, but I love escaping the city, too.
What is your favorite food?: Spicy. Sweet.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I would sleep, cook, go on a long walk, read, enjoy some alone time, with a fun family dinner to close the day. Maybe a night of live music and dancing once the kids are in bed.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband and two amazing sons, and 573 dust bunnies.
