Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I consumed so much birth-related content before my son was born that I felt like a walking encyclopedia - I just wanted to be prepared! I quickly realized that I had my hands full with a "velcro baby", so my time was spent chatting with other moms who also had high needs babies. I love learning about how a woman's body works in labour and postpartum, different parenting styles, and discovering the newest baby gear.
What led you to become a Doula?: During my pregnancy, I had a number of close friends and family members shame me and my husband's decision to have a home birth. It was hard to hear. I also had a tough time postpartum feeling "touched out", so knowing what I know now from my training, a doula would have been an essential asset to my labour and postpartum experience. I want to be able to give women and families the non-judgmental support I needed, because it truly does take a village.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I have been told that I am very passionate when it comes to personal goals, and my family. I’ve been told by personal and professional colleagues that I am a great listener; the friend who people come to seeking advice, or a shoulder to cry on. Under pressure, I’m able to think rationally, and that I have a very calming presence.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Dr, Jack Newman, Dr. Sears, Birth Without Fear, The Wonder Weeks
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I hope she has a great support system of family and friends that can be called upon when needed. I wonder if she knows about that local mom group where she can meet other new moms. I also wonder if she has a doula.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Unbiased support and confidence are so important. Also, some time for herself or with her partner while baby is being taken care of by a supportive person. A nice meal, hot shower, or even a quick nap can do wonders for a new mom!
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Netflix has spoiled me with so many great shows, but if I have to narrow it down, definitely Gilmore Girls. If I'm watching with my son, Bubble Guppies or The Wiggles.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I like vacation spots that allow for an equal balance of relaxation and exploration. Sitting on the beach or by the pool soaking up the sun, and learning about a country's history is perfect in my books.
What is your favorite food?: Give me a big, hardy salad, and I'm happy. I also love baked goods - from macarons from a French bakery, to home made treats from a mom and pop shop; I love it all!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Going for breakfast, exploring the city, or taking day trips.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband, our son, and our rescue cat, Kiwi.
