Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: With experience as a Medical Assistant in the local OB/GYN office and as a Certified Childbirth Educator (CAPPA), Samantha lends an enormous insider knowledge into the world of childbirth in her local area. She has very cooperative and friendly relationships established with local providers and nurses and also delivered her own children in local Boone hospitals.

What led you to become a Doula?: From a very early age I have always been interested in learning about women's health, and especially childbirth. Before I even knew I wanted to have my own children I began my studies to become a doula. I love supporting women and families during this transformative and powerful time in their lives.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

I often hear feedback from people that I “keep my calm no matter what.” In fact, I remember one night after interviewing with a potential client, my car almost rolled backwards off the side of their driveway (I was learning to drive a stickshift in the mountains!). I had to go back into their house for help and by the end of the ordeal they said; “You’re hired! If you can stay that calm through something like this we want you at our birth.”

More kind words from past clients:
“Hey Sam! You were such incredible help through the hardest part of the delivery. I was telling Jesse [husband] how incredible it was that it seemed like he knew exactly what I needed and when I needed it throughout the delivery. He said ‘I’d like to take credit but actually Sam was giving me a lot of hints.’ Well it worked and it made me feel so close to my husband in an even deeper way than even the first birth. Your touch and your direction was right on throughout the experience. Thank you so much Sam for helping to create a precious memory I will always cherish. Thank you thank you thank you!” –Meredith C.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I alway received the most help simply from other moms and dads. I am an avid reader, but honestly, I learn more chatting with other moms for 10 mins that I ever learn in books or online. Find a good local mom group and pop in to pick some brains.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see or a woman close to giving birth, I think; “Wow, this woman’s about to have her whole world flipped upside down.” The journey into parenthood is such a transformative experience. It can be beautiful, sad, exciting, and terrifying all at the same time, and I always wonder how who she is now will change after she becomes a mother.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Unconditional acceptance, support and guidance in finding her own strength and wisdom….and a cold washcloth to the forehead during transition.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: -Movie- Harold and Maude

What is your favorite place to vacation?: -New Orleans

What is your favorite food?: -Whole artichokes, eaten leaf by leaf, dipped in butter seasoned with Old Bay.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: -Sleeping in then going to the Lake with my husband and kids, eating out, and then going out for cocktails with my husband.

Who lives in your house?: Husband, Shamba, 4 ½ yr old son August, 2 ½ yr old daughter Layla, and me.
