Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My experiences in giving birth to six children, including two who spent time in a level-three NICU, and one who has special needs and required open-heart surgery as an infant, provide invaluable insight and understanding in working with new parents, especially those facing difficult postpartum circumstances. I have spent nine-and-a-half years breastfeeding, working through numerous breastfeeding challenges along the way.
What led you to become a Doula?: I love babies! I believe every baby is a beautiful gift from God. For as long as I can remember I have been enthralled by the miracle of birth. I also understand that becoming a new parent is a time of major adjustment. I empathize with the intense challenges that new parents face. This has given me the passion to provide compassionate support to new parents.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I have been told that I am good at sharing my heart and listening.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: A few of my favorite pregnancy/parenting resources have been "A Nursing Mother's Companion" by Kathleen Huggins, "Mom to Mom" by Elisa Morgan, "Motherhood Stress" by Deborah Shaw Lewis, and a few trusted older friends who are good at listening.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I cannot help but smile wistfully when I see a pregnant woman or a new mom! How many memories flood my mind! Rocking babies... wondering if I would die from exhaustion... gazing at tiny feet and fingers in wonder... feeling insecure... nuzzling fuzzy heads... worrying about feeding issues... getting to know a little person who would never stop amazing me... all a part of the beautiful journey of motherhood.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: As a doula I want to give new mothers the gift of knowing that they are not alone in this journey. I want them to know that someone is there to come alongside them, to hold them up, encourage them, and give them the support they need to be the mother they want to be.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: One of my favorite movies is "It's a Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stuart.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: My favorite place to vacation is a campsite on a lake in northern Wisconsin where I can spend time kayaking.
What is your favorite food?: My favorite food is Lucky Charms cereal!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: A good day off for me would include taking a long walk with my husband, reading some good books with my kids, and working on a sewing project or other craft.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my six children (three boys and three girls), ranging in age from 2 to 17, and my wonderful husband Tom.
