Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a mother of 4, grandmother to 4 and formerly fostered over 25 children including many traumatized infants. I am a former Family Partner for a mental health agency. My role was to walk alongside families as they navigated their child's mental health needs. I am a certified postpartum doula and a pre-certified birth doula through other organizations. It has been my privilege to provide support to many families since I began my journey into birth work.

What led you to become a Doula?: In 1994, while working in billing alongside midwives at a local birth center, I discovered my love for birth work. In 2017, I decided it was time to rediscover this passion and began my journey as a birth and postpartum doula. I have always loved being a support person during transitional life events: birth, postpartum, family changes, as well as, death. The postpartum period is a foundational area of birth work; where a doula can provide the support needed for new parents to gain confidence in their ability to navigate this transition.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

“Somedays #icanteven. Which is why we hired an amazing postpartum doula to be a part of our family’s team. What a blessing she has been throughout the process of transitioning to a family of 7! I would highly recommend Doula Sheryl. She is honestly so knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate with the care she provides. So happy to have her on the rough days…okay and the good ones too.” Ashlee

“Wow, working with Sheryl is great! She helped prepare my son for being a sibling with a very special ‘Super Sibling’ certificate program and it made him feel really special. I definitely recommend her to pregnant and post-partum moms!” Emily

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I am a master Googler. The demographic I serve goes from urban to rural, meaning one particular source of information does not work across the board for my clientele. For solid information, I use the Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I wonder how they're feeling. Do they have enough support? I wonder if they know what a doula is.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: My ability to think "outside the box" and to provide individualized services is the best gift I offer parents. I pay attention to their needs and listen to their worries. I don't lead or follow, I walk alongside them.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I am a Survivor super fan.

What is your favorite place to vacation?: Orcas Island in the San Juans

What is your favorite food?: Thai!

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Taking day trips with my husband or hanging out on the couch with my best friend.

Who lives in your house?: My husband, Dean.
