Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: In my opinion, being a naturally friendly, patient and caring person is beneficial to birth work. I don’t think any prior formal experience is necessary, as long as the interest, passion and hard work is there, anyone can work in this field.

What led you to become a Doula?: Since high school I have wanted to be a travel labor and delivery nurse. I wanted to care for women in developing countries specifically, but also women here in the United States as well. I started nursing school but found out quickly that it was not for me. This path seemed like it wasn’t going to work out for me but I was still interested in cultures, religions, women’s issues and had a passion for taking care of others. I then transferred to SUNY Oneonta to pursue an International Development Studies degree and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. Last semester I took a class called Anthropology of Reproduction where I first heard of the word “doula”. Once I did some research and learned more about doulas in my class, I realized that I could still pursue my dream career of working with pregnant women and their babies. This discovery led me to ProDoula.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

People always tell me that I have a big heart and that I am more honest and caring than most people they know. Past employers and professors have told me that I am a very dedicated and hard worker. Many friends of mine have also told me that I have a very laid back and unique personality.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I think talking to different people with babies and young children is the best resource because you will learn new information from every woman or family you speak to.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I get instantly happy when I see a pregnant woman or brand new mom, I feel so happy for her. I also wonder when she is due and if it is a boy or a girl.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: As a birth worker, I think the best gift you can give a new mom is advice and support.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite TV show is Blackish and my favorite movie is Pursuit of Happiness

What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love to go to beaches with my family but I studied abroad in India last year and that would definitely be my favorite place to vacation now.

What is your favorite food?: Anything with chocolate!

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Reading, practicing yoga and spending time with family and friends

Who lives in your house?: My father and mother and me (when I am home from college). I have two sisters but they both live on their own.
