Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have spent over 15 years working in the field of education, from preschool through middle school, even as a guest presenter during a college course. My work in education has made me very comfortable with diverse groups of people. I love to share information. Every question is a good question, and I enjoy being a part of the search for answers. I also have a certificate in plant-based nutrition, which is very helpful in creating yummy, healthy meals.
What led you to become a Doula?: Growing up with a labor & delivery nurse as a mom, birthwork has been a part of what shaped me. I’ve always felt proud of my mother for being so strong, so committed, and so confident in her work. My Caribbean family background gave me the notion that birth was normal and natural, and that women are capable of birth. When I had my first child, I was so blessed to have my mother on my labor team with my midwife, as well as three of her old colleagues, and two of my best friends. Not only that, but my mother and my sister served me my meals in bed for an entire week! My only job was to eat, nurse my baby, go to the bathroom and shower, and allow my sister to assist me with that, as well as binding my belly. I had real support. This is what led me to become a doula. Realizing the value of that support, and the honor of doing what has been done for me.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People have told me that I give 100% to whatever I do, that I am intelligent, committed, great with children, and fun to be around.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My favorite pregnancy resources are the stories told to me by elders, family, and friends. These traditions have been passed down from generation to generation, and I am honored to have been entrusted with them. Other resources include books on maternal and infant nutrition and herbal remedies, such as Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year, by Susun Weed.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Thoughts of admiration and respect come to mind when I see a pregnant woman or brand new mom. I think of how special she is, and how much she deserves the best.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gifts I can give to a new mom are: compassionate listening, unwavering support, acknowledgement, appreciation, and encouragement.
