Doulas with anxiety aren’t failing, they’ve just been forgotten… Your heart races when your phone buzzes.. A new potential client? Someone in labor? A dispute about contractual language? Does this sound like you?
Are you lying awake at night thinking about upcoming births, back-to-back postpartum shifts, unread emails, whether or not you’re doing any of this right…. And even when you are doing it right, are you still feeling like everyone else is doing it better…
Welcome to the invisible weight of being a doula with anxiety.
No one talks about the mental load we carry as doulas. We talk all the time about the emotional intensity of doula work, but the constant, low-grade buzz in our heads around running a doula business, never.
The pressure to always be available, always be calm, always prepared… even when you’re absolutely spiraling inside. If you can relate to this, you’re not alone.
What Anxiety Can Look Like for Doulas:
- A racing mind after every prenatal, wondering if you said the “right” things.
- The dread of checking your email or phone messages.
- Feeling paralyzed by too many tasks, then beating yourself up for not getting enough done.
- Questioning your worth every time a client chooses someone else.
- Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, because your brain never shuts off.
And yet, you keep showing up. You keep “holding space” for others while quietly struggling to hold it for yourself.
Some Tips that Might Help Doulas with Anxiety:
Talk about It, doula anxiety is real.
Normalize the reality of anxiety by talking about it (like this blog is trying to do) and realize that it doesn’t make you bad at this work, it just makes you real and honest. <3
Create business boundaries that protect your peace of mind.
Office hours. A backup system. A call back schedule. A priority list. An assistant. Etc. Don’t let it all pile up on you…
Find a therapist that you’re comfortable working with.
You are not “too sensitive.” You are a human doing heart-heavy work. You deserve support just as much as your clients do.
Ask yourself, is this urgent or is it my anxiety talking?
Everything feels like an emergency when your nervous system is flooded. Slow down. Breathe. And, ask yourself, “Is this urgent or is it my anxiety talking?”
