Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I worked for a few years as a personal assistant to a woman with quadriplegia. Working so closely and intimately with someone taught me a lot about how to provide judgment-free support. I learned how to listen deeply, and provide assistance in a way that honored her wishes and intent – all while allowing her to maintain control of her life.
What led you to become a Doula?: Initially I wanted to become a midwife. In Ontario, it’s a very competitive program to get into and I thought being a doula could give me an edge. However, as soon as I attended my first doula birth, I realized that this was the path for me. I love the continuous support I can provide my clients when I don’t have to put my attention to the medical side of things. I also love that I can continue working with my clients through their adjustment into parenthood as their postpartum doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
My favorite comments to hear from past clients are that they appreciated the professional and judgment-free support I provided during their pregnancies and transitions into parenthood. From friends and family, I’m often told that I’m passionate and open-minded.
