Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Hi! I'm KayBee! I am a newborn care specialist with experience working with multiples and preemies! I also primarily work with a lot of first time parents who find my very calm demeanor reassuring. I am also a trained birth doula and have a great understanding of the way labor and delivery work and how it affects the postpartum period. I am also a perinatal nutrition educator and cook a lot of healthy meals for the birthing person that helps with postpartum recovery . I am currently training to become a breastfeeding educator as I am a big advocate for breast/chest feeding. I am also of Caribbean Indigenous descent and incorporate a lot of Caribbean, African and Ayurvedic practices into my work. Those practices along side the western evidence based practices, make the care I provided distinctly different and unique and more well rounded.

What led you to become a Doula?: I recall when I became a parent, in my homeland, St.Vincent and the Grenadines, I had so much support from friends, family members and elders in my community. It was great to feel so supported, so empowered and I stepped into the role of parent confidently. I realized that not every family here has that network of support. I wanted the families I serve to have that experience I had, that support. I also recognized that the medical system in this country doesn't really lift up the birthing person during this amazing journey to becoming a parent! The fact that birthing people are dying in child birth at a higher rate than any other country in the world, is very troubling to me, rates for postpartum depression are also higher, rates for infant mortality in the first year of life..we need to do more to address this crisis and it's why this work is critical for me to do, in this moment.
