Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have been supporting families in birth and bereavement for two years. My dedication to this drives my work toward labor doula certification, toward bereavement doula certification, toward blogging about all things family, and toward researching families in my PhD work.
What led you to become a Doula?: As the oldest of five kids and as a babysitter/nanny throughout high school and college, I saw early on how hard it is to be a parent. When I started earning my PhD (studying families), I realized that family formation is an epicenter for those challenges. I wanted to help in a hands-on way, so I took a birth doula training and fell in love with the work. I am also a bereavement doula. I inherited a devotion to walking with people in grief from my mom. Growing up, she would take me and my siblings to every funeral we could attend in our community, in order to make sure no one ever grieved alone. I continue that mission as a bereavement doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People tell me that I make them feel comfortable and heard. People who don’t know me often are surprised by my knowledge about and passion for families at all stages of the family formation process. Clients also tell me that they appreciate my affirming nature and my ability to connect them to resources.
