Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I work with a Pregnancy Service agency providing doula and education services to at-risk women to help decrease infant and maternal mortality in a neighboring county. I worked as a breastfeeding peer counselor for WIC for two years. I currently am a Certified Lactation Counselor. I have four children of my own. I've had two preemies, two cesareans, one VBAC, and one vaginal delivery. I also trained with DONA International as a birth and postpartum doula. I am CPR certified and ServeSafe Certified for food preparation.
What led you to become a Doula?: I am fascinated with birth and breastfeeding. I loved hearing women's birth stories and loved my own personal experience with breastfeeding. I am a single mother and had very limited support during pregnancy and postpartum, and I had two very traumatic cesarean deliveries. Through WIC I learned how much birth impacted breastfeeding and it increased my interest in birth and how it could help with increasing breastfeeding rates. I almost had a doula for my first birth and in later pregnancies, my interest in them increased. I also love the birth work community.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People have always told me I’m very passionate and driven. I’ve been frequently told I’m kind and down to earth.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I really love Lamaze, March of Dimes, and Spinning Babies. The Wonder Weeks is also a favorite newborn book of mine as it gives parents a unique view on baby development. Jack Newman is one of my favorite Lactation Consultants as well as a local pediatrician and Lactation consultant Ann Witt that runs Breastfeeding Medicine of Northeast Ohio. They use therapeutic breastfeeding massage as a technique to help with engorgement and hand expression, and Ann Witt specializes in identifying and treating tongue ties. ICAN helped me with my VBAC and is a great resource for moms interested in VBACs.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Curiosity and wanting to know what their story is.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Educational and Emotional Support. I think informed decision making makes a world of difference in birth experiences and emotional support helps them feel safe.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Jurassic Park/World Collection also Frozen 2
What is your favorite place to vacation?: So far Lexington, KY! Horse capital of the US!
What is your favorite food?: All seafood
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Sleeping! Once I've gotten my energy back going to the park or movies.
