Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have an undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College with focuses in reproductive health, psychology and cultural studies.I have training in the Fertility Awareness Method of ovulation support and have also worked at a daycare with infants for the past four years!
What led you to become a Doula?: My original interest stems from my studies into somatic psychology and how trauma shows up in the way we can or cannot be embodied. When I started studying fertility and reproductive health in college, a natural combination of the two was within birth work! After working as a doula for several years, my interest simply continued to deepen. Now I am a prospective midwifery student and continue to work in the doula field with birth and postpartum.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
My clients have said that my presence in the room and my knowledge surrounding all things birth have been a crucial part of their smooth deliveries. Additionally, a labor and delivery nurse also told me that I was one of the best doulas to work with in the 22 years of her being in that field. My mentor also told me that my hands on and emotional support would be rated a 10 on a scale of 1-10.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: One of my favorite prenatal resources is the spinning babies website to support healthy movement for pregnancy. I love handouts from the motherboard website, and from DONA international. I also usually recommend several books like Natural Hospital Birth by Cynthia Gabriel and The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin. For parenting resources, I often try to connect people with other parents/groups in their area.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see pregnant people, I often wonder if its their first baby, if they have the resources they need, and what their birth plan may be! When people have brand new infants, I often hope that their postpartum period feels supported and that they have what they need to care for their new addition to their family.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: My continuous, committed, and caring support combined with my knowledge in the field, academic and otherwise.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: New Girl, the Good Place, Jane the Virgin or Broad City!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Orcas Island, WA
What is your favorite food?: Enchiladas from Rancho De Chimayo in New Mexico
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Somewhere outside, with a cup of tea and a book or a good show! Or at a farmers market.
Who lives in your house?: My wonderful roommates and my cat, Cardamom!
