Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My background is in health promotion research and evaluation and I use those academic skills daily. As I transitioned through my own experiences with pregnancy, birth and parenting I felt called to work with women and families. I’m really happy to be able to merge my background and interests in my doula practice.
What led you to become a Doula?: I was deeply touched by my experience with my doula and I said to her, “You have the BEST job in the world!”. It dawned on me: she had what I longed for. I chatted with a few loved ones and every one of them responded with some variation of “That is SO YOU! You are perfect for that”. I made a decision to align myself with my passion, booked a training and never looked back
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I’m told my best assets as a doula are my truly non-judgmental approach and my calm disposition. I make people feel comfortable and confident.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I think the best resource is a true friend. Specifically, a friend who never judges or questions you and one who celebrates your wins and reminds you of your awesome when you’re down.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a pregnant woman or a new mom, I hope she isn’t feeling pressured to give birth or to parent according to anyone else’s agenda. I hope she has people in her life who meet her where she is and build her confidence.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Confidence in herself – knowing that she is everything her baby needs. Equally, confidence to seek support when she feels like she needs it.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My current fave is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: The Maritimes, hands down!
What is your favorite food?: Burritos
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: In my backyard with my family. Playing, eating, gardening, lounging.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, our two babies, and our dog.
