Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Some nursing school experience. Been involved in 1 hospital birth for a friend. Worked in a hospital setting for about 2 1/2 years
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always been very interested, even passionate about pregnancy and babies. Growing up I was the oldest in my family as well as the oldest of all 16 of my cousins so I had a lot of experience with babies and young children. Since middle school I have wanted to become a labor and delivery or maternity nurse. I started nursing school and because of some complications I have yet to finish. Before a couple years ago, when a friend of mine had a doula for one of her home births, I didn't know a job like this even existed. Once I started researching what a doula actually was, I was thrilled! And after I took the labor doula class I was even more thrilled to find out that this just seemed to put all my passions together into one job and sounded like it was an even better fit for me as a person than nursing would have been. I am extremely excited to have this opportunity and to be a supporter to many mothers and families in the future!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
As soon as I tell anyone that I am a doula, and sometimes have to explain what it is, they only have positive comments for me! Most people say, “Jalecia, I’m so happy for you! This sounds like such a good fit!”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Considering I am not a parent myself yet, I feel like I don't have a very wide variety of resources that I am confident about but I do find that my friends who are already mothers are one of the biggest, most important resources. Although everyone is different, going off someone's personal experience is one of the most helpful resources there is. Also, I have only been apart of the doula membership page on Facebook for a short time, but I have already learned so much just by reading everyone's questions, answers and birth stories that they have shared.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My heart is instantly happy at the thought of new life, pregnant or a brand new mom! I also start thinking of all the ways that I could potentially help out or get involved. Pregnancy and birth are so intriguing to me so any way that the mom is willing to let me be involved, even if that is just talking to her about her feelings about the pregnancy or the new birth, I get so excited!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I feel like the best gift you can give a new mom would be support; helping her physically and emotionally whether this means washing some dishes she hasn't gotten to, just sitting down and talking to her about the transition her life is making with a new baby present or just encouraging her that she is doing great at what she's already doing!
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Hart of Dixie or Grey's Anatomy
What is your favorite place to vacation?: The mountains
What is your favorite food?: French fries
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love spending my days off with my closest friends usually doing something outside such as taking a walk at the park. I love getting together with my friends just to chat and find out what is new in their lives. Another thing I enjoy is being in the kitchen making all kinds of food because I love food and love to share it with friends as well.
Who lives in your house?: My husband and I
