Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am certified postpartum doula through two different certifying bodies, and have worked with many families in the past two years.
What led you to become a Doula?: From a very young age, I have always adored babies. As I grew older and became the "unofficial" postpartum doula for my relatives when they had their babies, I realized how underserved and neglected new mothers are - our families are so far away, grandparents are working and not as likely to be retired, so there is little help a majority of mothers can depend upon when they come home from the hospital, exhausted and unsure of themselves. I always said my dream job would be to go in after a mom has a baby, cook for her, do a little cleaning and just take care of baby while they could rest or shower - I was absolutely thrilled when I learned this was an actual profession!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I have heard I am compassionate, a good listener, funny, and that I know instinctively what needs to be done without someone needing to ask!
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Kellymom.com; askdrsears.com; bellybelly.com.au; mothering.com
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I am truly excited for them and hope they are able to enjoy this fleeting time to the fullest!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I believe the best gift that I can give new parents is the confidence that they need to know that they are doing a great job with their new baby. While exciting, a new baby is exhausting and daunting, and you might not always feel that you are doing the "right thing". I am there to help them realize that they are the ones that ultimately know their baby the best, and just to guide them as they begin to feel more secure in their parenting skills.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Laverne and Shirley
What is your favorite place to vacation?: A tie between Cape May and Dublin
What is your favorite food?: Cereal!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Running, reading, or knitting...I also love to bake, hence the need to run!
Who lives in your house?: My husband and my corgi, Honey. My two sons are in college, but live here when they are not at school.
