Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies, interned in college under midwives at a birthing center, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Certified High School Teacher in Family and Consumer Sciences, 10 years of nanny experience, Trainer of preschool teachers and daycare workers in the high school setting and mother to a lovely little girl.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always enjoyed meeting women where they are and supporting them through any pregnancy-related transitions. While I was interning at the birth center for my bachelor’s degree, a doula who helped teach our childbirth classes told me I had a natural ability and really should consider becoming a doula. I told her I had not even considered it and she said, “you’re already a support person at the birth center…find a training and follow your talents.” I was hired by my first clients at the next week’s class and my journey started there. There is nothing greater for me than to be allowed into a client’s labor space and to witness them find their inner strength.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I am often told I am reliable, trustworthy and strong. I’ve also been told I am very compassionate and relatable to people of all ages.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: A lot of my clients enjoy the information they find at Birth Without Fear, Evidence Based Birth, Science and Sensibility, La Leche League International and all of our local Obstetricians and Midwives.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I often wonder what she’s feeling; if she is excited or anxious. I always hope she’s feeling confident and happy.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give a new mom as a birth worker is nonjudgmental support. I just can’t stress how important that is for instilling confidence in her choices and trust in her ability to care for her family in the best way possible for her.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite TV shows are Outlander, Call the Midwife and Criminal Minds.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: My all-time favorite vacation spot is San Pedro, Belize, where my husband proposed to me in 2014.
What is your favorite food?: Hands down, my mom’s carne guisada on HEB fresh tortillas.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to lay low on my days off with a cup of hot tea with my husband and catch up on “fun reading” or binge watch an entire season of something on Netflix. If we both have a few days off, we drive down to Houston, San Antonio or Wimberley to get away and soak in our time together with family.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband and our new baby girl. We also have 3 very spoiled cats, named after pop stars, because we are those people.
