Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a Licensed Practical Nurse with 15 years of experience, 7 of those in an OBGYN office. I learned a great deal during those years about the challenges a pregnant woman can face, which has helped me better understand and support women in their pregnancy journey. I am also a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and enjoying helping women and their partners learn about the labor and birth process.

What led you to become a Doula?: Twenty years ago I helped a home-birth midwife with 10 home deliveries and my interest was caught. Over the next decade I had other responsibilities with my time and was unable to pursue further training for nursing or midwifery education. Just over 8 years ago, a friend of mine asked me to be with her during her birth. I agreed and during the process was reminded of my interest in helping women in this manner. So I started pursing education and certification to become a doula. I’ve never looked back!

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

I am often told I am a calming presence and give unwavering support. I have also been told I am a steady hand when things start to go crazy.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Websites: evidencebasedbirth.com, Scienceandsensibility.org, childbirthconnection.org, spinningbabies.org Books: The Birth Partner, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child, Natural Childbirth The Bradley Way.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: -When is she due? I wonder if she has a doula. Where is she delivering? Who is her provider? – Congratulations to her! I wonder how her birth went? Does she have enough postpartum support?

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Information, confidence, and unconditional support for the choices she makes in her pregnancy and childbirth process.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Anything of Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, or Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South.

What is your favorite place to vacation?: Any beach, any where, any time! My favorite thus far has been Labadee, Haiti.

What is your favorite food?: Peach cobbler for sure! I enjoy so many others it is hard to pick just one!

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Reading, taking a nice walk, browsing antique stores or flea markets.

Who lives in your house?: Besides myself… Steve, my hubby of 13 years, and our cat Lynx who likes to hang out the window and greet the neighbors.
