Pssst… New Doula, I’m Talkin’ to You

Posted on: April 13, 2018 | Become a Doula, Doula, Doula Certification, Doula Inspiration

I hear it all the time. New Doulas doubting themselves when they talk with me, because I have been doing this work longer than they have.

New Doulas feeling hesitant to jump into the work that they want to because they are newly trained or still working on their doula certification.

…..and because…and because…..and because.

Well let me tell you something. We “older, more experienced” doulas need you! We need you younger, newer, “less experienced” doulas and appreciate you more than you know. The old birds are looking ahead to the time when they can pass their torch, and it is you, new doula who our torches will be passed to.

New Doulas, You have an energy.

This energy that our communities need, the clients enjoy, and that helps encourage the more seasoned doulas on the days that we are tired. We see you and can remember the days when we were the new doula on the block, and we are inspired.

New Doulas, Your perspectives are valuable.

For those of us who have been in birth work for a while, you bring new and fresh perspectives that are important for us to hear and listen to. They help us grow and get better!

New Doulas, You have skills!

Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t good at what you do because you have less “seasoning” right now. I cannot count the number of times I’ve seen brand new doulas move through client support with such grace that not one other person in the room would question their experience level. As Randy Patterson says, “If we were stuck in an elevator and I was in labor, any one of you could doula me and you’d be exactly what I need…”

New Doulas, We need and want you!

Our industry is growing. The demand for doula services before, during, and after birth is growing. And we need our profession to grow with the demand. ProDoula has had a profound impact on the definition of Professional Doula and you are evidence of this.

I am so excited that you are being better prepared for longevity and endurance then I was. And this leaves me hopeful about not only your individual future, but the future of the professional doula.

We have an invaluable place in the birth world that is important, and you, new doula, have everything you need to take it to the next level!
