Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have been a birth and breastfeeding advocate since becoming pregnant with my first in 2012. Shortly after I became a active member of the Tarrant Country Breastfeeding Coalition, the Texas Birth Network, the Fort Worth Baby Wearers as well as the local Crunchy Moms Group. I had my first born with an OBGYN and had a typical hospital birth, my second was born with a midwife, as a water birth. I like to think I have experienced two sides of the birth world. I also bring four years and counting of breastfeeding and baby-wearing experience.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have suffered from Endometriosis for most of my life. When my husband and I began trying to conceive it became obvious this wasn't going to be an easy road. After about a year of trying we found out we were expecting and shortly after that I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum which ultimately forced me to quit my job. I was losing weight instead of gaining and I couldn't eat. My stress was at an all time high. I confided in a friend and she gave her Doula my number. After one conversation with her she began to put me at ease, and gave me the strength I didn't know I needed. I hired her right then and there. She helped calm my fears by educating me on all my options. I knew then, this was my calling. I want to support mothers as I was supported in what was a scary time for me. I believe every mother deserves a Doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“Katie is attentive and insightful, she is also kind and empathetic.”
“Katie has a way of listening to a problem and finding a way to comfort you while turning what you believe to be negative, into something positive.”
“Katie has a deep passion and relentless quest for knowledge, especially when it comes to birth and breastfeeding.”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Anything by Dr. Sears or Ina May, The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin and Your Best Birth by Rickie Lake and Abby Esptein.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I hope she's happy, supported and feeling well! I hope she knows she has options and has the resources to find them.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Unbiased and unconditional support is so important. I want to give the mothers freedom to explore all their options and to educate them along the way. I never want the mothers to feel they are alone. I want each mom to know I'll be there with her every step of the way, as much as she needs me.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I have too many to pin point just one but a few are Friends, The Office, Game of Thrones, Grey's Anatomy and The Magicians.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: My husband and I love to snowboard, we are happy anywhere there is enough snow to slide on. The beach is nice too but the mountains are our second home.
What is your favorite food?: Food, all of it! I can go hard on some Sushi, Mexican or Italian anytime!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: With my family of course! We love to work around our house, go to the the local farmers market, the zoo, or find something to do around downtown.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, Thomas; our daughter,Kelea; our son, Kai; our 3 Yorkies as well as a bunch of chickens, guinea fowls and a barn cat that adopted us but they live outside.
